I wouldn’t call myself a perfectionist, but when I play video games… somehow I really start to feel like one. It’s so tough for me to just… play the damn game without feeling as though I have to do every side quest, get every weapon, and play things as optimally as I can. That gets old real quick, and maybe it does for you as well. Let’s talk about why this is and maybe, how to fix it!

Games That Hide The Horror In The Ordinary
Переглядів 338 тис.Місяць тому
Many of the games we play nowadays work because they are bombastic, colorful, endlessly packed with wonder. And generally, all of the things that give them those qualities are placed right before our eyes in the form of big moments, big boss fights, big plot points. But there are a handful of games I played recently that make that wonder in the subtext… games that craft their horror in the litt...

Man a lot of anime is pretty dumb. It's hard to feel guilt when you had zero choice in the game. Undertale always gave you the choice, that's why it hurt so much. Spec Ops: The Line didn't give you a choice and made it pretty obvious what was going to happen, but you don't just put down a book because you don't like the ending. A lot of the games you mentioned fall into the latter category. There have been smaller side quests in games like Baldur's Gate that use player agency to really hammer down the guilt. For example a grieving father in one of the inns whose son dies from trying to become an adventurer. He blames you and naturally, stands no chance against you and your party. However, if you navigate the dialogue well you can talk him down in many ways, with threats or ideally making him see reason. Or you can run him through at the first sentence because he threatens you, only to have his friend run over and explain how he was drunk and grieving over his son. There are ways of doing this well and very few do.

I want to work on not binging as much on my games, as I am a very organized and goal-oriented person. I enjoy collecting all of the achievements, but this summer, I want to work on taking time with my games and playing a little bit every day as to keep things consistent and not feel overwhelmed, starting with focusing on games I am currently in progress on as well as what's on my backlog. Any tips as not to rush but still feel like I'm making progress and enjoying what the game has to offer at the same time? I'm welcome to advice, tips, and assistance.

this is very applicable to me with making art, despite it being super applicable to gaming, which is another thing I do. granted I have always been aware of my perfectionist tendencies, so of course it would be relevant, but still, the information crosses over. no one has ever had this useful nugget before, I have had to figure things out for myself for a long while and that has sometimes fed my 'no stone left unturned' tendencies, it is even sillier that those feelings would be validated by the very thing that can help me ignore them.

If you think elden ring is a masterpiece it's because you never played dark souls 3. If you think dark souls 3 is a masterpiece it's because you never played dark souls 1. If you think dark souls 1 is a masterpiece it's because you never played demons' souls. If you think demons' souls is a masterpiece it's because you never played ninja gaiden sigma. If you think ninja gaiden sigma is a masterpiece you are 100% correct.

Dead space? Count yourself fortunate. I’ve been this way since games went 3D! The first Resident evil being the most egregious memory where it was necessary to horde and find all the ammo you can among other things. Fortunately I’ve gotten better over the years at discerning whether or not the game offers good enough rewards pretty quickly to consider whether it’s worth it or not.

Gaming, all of it, is intentionally designed. There are few things that 'slip' into a game un-noticed especially in AAA games. They WANT you to check out that side room despite the main story telling you otherwise. Someone designed that room just for you to walk in, and see nothing useful. Then there's the negative side of this, "You want the all the armor transmogs options unlocked? Make sure you buy it in the shop before it's gone!" Devs *know* many gamers have been conditioned to not miss side content. I think your solution of 'Trust' is right, but how do you trust EA or Blizzard? You don't, you have to be OK with missing a ton of content in these modern games. So in a manner, they've also conditioned (some of) us to be ok with missing stuff. And this is only getting more and more egregious as gaming modernizes. Resident Evil 4 remake for example. You get 2 unique guns if you pre-ordered (or bought them as DLC). If you didn't, you'll never have the (mediocre) experience of using those two guns that are easily replaced by guns found in the game. But my inner-vain-perfectionist demon would not let me get the game without all the content so of course I bought the deluxe edition and never used any of the extra guns, costumes, or filters they added. It sucks, but the solution of 'focusing on the fun, rather than the 100% completion,' has helped massively when I play MMOs or MMO-likes.

You just have to know that you cannot and dont have time to play everything, focus on Filtering the right games for you and get to know what you really like to play. Theres a lot of huge name games that really are just meh for me and you, we all have different preferences, get to know yours really well and dont go after every big name or every big discount. I just bought 4 games recently and im finishing one at a time before I buy some more i want, even tho they have discounts right now. Buy a couple, play and finish them first before you buy more, because the guilt of knowing your money is already gone but the new game is not even installed yet can be too big and cause you to have decision paralysis and not even play anything. 1- Learn what you really like! Focus on FILTERING better for yourself 2- Priorize your backlog and don't be afraid to never touch some game you bought in the past. Finish your god damm backlog (the games you really want to finish) 3- Only buy 3/4 games at a time at maximum, 1 if you can so you don't build another backlog again. NO MORE BACKLOGS! 4- Make collections on Steam, by genre or something. Actually separate the games by groups and make one for games you've already finished and are not playing again, get them out of your everyday view because they are just bluring your decisions. 5- DO . NOT . PREORDER We . don't . have . time . to . play . everything, learn to FILTER yourself

this video hit extremely close to home, im a very philosophical person and the thing that i struggle with every day is time. sometimes i don't understand it, sometimes i cant come to grips with it. time is the one thing in our lives we dont have, and never will have, any control over. and thats just something that, not really saddens, but deeply disturbs me, sometimes i think about how much time i spend playing a game or working while zoning out, and ill think about how much time im wasting that i could use building my future or making memories and connections, but whats done is done and there is no back button. and i feel you when you said you never cry but this video made you cry bc me too, usually when hit with my realization that i waste a ton of time i zone out or brush it off but your video made me think and its just very somber. its just very hard to think about the fact that one thing we're told the most is to enjoy every moment when we as human beings were never designed to do that, you dont ever mean to zone out or forget things but it still happens. im 18 and my 19th is in in exactly 2 weeks. i can still remember some of my earliest memories and whatll feel like moments from now ill be thinking back on them knowing im about to make some of my last memories, and idk, i just feel a way i cant really describe. its like i dont want to live my future because the more i gain the more ill have to let go of one day. and idk if i just live in the past too much or what, but time really is just terrifying. i have a lot to think about, but i encourage everyone not to take the very fact that you're alive right at this moment for granted, and make the most of it, because what will feel like moments from now, you'll see your last memory, and after that you'll never know what happens because the world just goes on.

It's a bit of and odd comparison, but I found something similar with a piece of gear from Destiny- I know, hear me out. A set of gauntlets called Sunbracers, they were the only 'exotic' tier item I had 8 or 9 years ago. They weren't very good, but they were fun. These days, the game is in a very different space and I have just about all the 'exotic' items, but they're still my favorite. They got changed a few years back to be much better, but always niche compared to some other items. BUT much more recent, much of the main competition to Sunbracers got nerfed, and now suddenly they're the best exotic option for their class, and EVERYONE is using them. And that's annoying. The thing I liked is suddenly liked by everyone, which should be cool, but it's the opposite.
